Foley Catheter Care at Home: A Simple Guide for Families in Lahore
21 September 2026 · 2 min read · By Ideal Home Care

A Foley catheter is a thin tube that drains urine from the bladder into a bag. For patients who are bedridden, recovering from surgery, or unable to pass urine normally, it can be needed for days or weeks. With a few simple habits, families can keep the patient comfortable and lower the risk of infection.
Daily care basics
- Wash your hands with soap and water before and after touching the catheter or bag
- Clean the skin around the catheter opening gently with soap and water once or twice a day
- Keep the tube from twisting, kinking or being pulled when the patient moves
- Secure the tube to the thigh as advised by the nurse or doctor
Managing the drainage bag
Keep the bag below the level of the bladder at all times, so urine does not flow back. Empty it when it is about half to two-thirds full, and never let the outlet touch the floor or any container. Encourage the patient to drink enough fluids unless the doctor has restricted them.
Signs of infection or a problem
Call your doctor or a nurse promptly if you notice any of the following:
- Fever or chills
- Cloudy, foul-smelling or blood-stained urine
- Pain or swelling around the catheter or lower abdomen
- No urine draining into the bag for several hours
- The catheter falls out or leaks around the tube
When should the catheter be changed?
How often a Foley catheter is changed depends on the type of catheter and the doctor's advice. Changing it on schedule, and only by a trained person using sterile technique, lowers the risk of infection and injury. Trying to insert or replace it at home without training can cause serious harm.
