How to Care for a Bedridden Patient at Home: A Practical Guide
21 September 2026 · 1 min read · By Ideal Home Care

Caring for a bedridden parent or relative is demanding, both physically and emotionally. A few consistent habits protect the patient's health and make the routine easier for the whole family.
Prevent pressure sores
Lying in one position for long periods can damage the skin. Change the patient's position at least every two hours, keep the bedsheet dry and wrinkle-free, and check the skin over the hips, heels, back and elbows daily for redness.
Hygiene and comfort
Regular sponge baths, clean clothes and oral care reduce infection risk and help the patient feel respected and comfortable. Keep the room clean, ventilated and at a comfortable temperature.
Feeding and hydration
Help the patient sit as upright as is safe while eating, offer small frequent meals, and encourage fluids unless the doctor has restricted them. Patients with swallowing difficulty or a feeding tube need guidance from a doctor or trained nurse.
Medication and monitoring
Give medicines exactly as prescribed and keep a written schedule. Note changes in appetite, sleep, breathing, or mood, and share them with the doctor at follow-up visits.
Looking after the caregiver
Family caregivers burn out quickly when they carry the whole load. Sharing shifts, or bringing in a trained attendant or nurse for day, night or live-in support, keeps the patient safe and gives the family time to rest.
