IV Therapy at Home in Lahore: When You Need It and What to Expect

Many families assume an IV drip means a hospital admission. In reality, when a doctor has prescribed it, IV therapy can often be given safely at home by a trained nurse. This guide explains when that makes sense and what a home visit looks like.

When is IV therapy given at home?

IV (intravenous) therapy delivers fluids or medication directly into a vein. Doctors commonly prescribe it for patients who cannot take enough fluids or medicine by mouth, or who need a short course of treatment that works faster through a vein.

  • Dehydration from vomiting, diarrhoea, fever or heat exposure
  • Recovery after surgery when the doctor advises continued IV medication
  • Elderly or weak patients who struggle to eat and drink
  • Prescribed IV antibiotics or other infusions that do not need hospital monitoring

What happens during a home visit

The nurse first checks the prescription and the patient's condition, including temperature, pulse and blood pressure. Only then is the IV line inserted, using sterile equipment, and the drip is started at the rate the doctor ordered.

The nurse stays to watch for reactions, checks the insertion site, and removes the line once the infusion is complete. Families are told what signs to watch for afterwards, such as swelling, redness or pain around the site.

How to prepare

Keep the doctor's prescription ready, along with any recent reports and a list of medicines the patient already takes. Choose a clean, well-lit room with a comfortable place for the patient to sit or lie down.

When to go to a hospital instead

Home IV therapy is for stable patients following a doctor's plan. Severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, or a rapidly worsening condition needs emergency hospital care. If you are unsure, speak to your doctor first.
